Review the issuer, product details, supporting documents and integrity evidence to understand what a passport tells you.
A Digital Product Passport associates information with a product. Its format and technical foundations can vary; this guide describes useful checks for issuer, file, product and ownership information.
Several sources help put a product record in context.
Which issuer or creator supplied the record.
How the product details compare with the item.
What ownership information is recorded and where it comes from.
Which brand or creator issued the passport.
Whether the file has integrity evidence to review.
01
Locate the NFC tag or QR code and scan it with the Beligent scanner
Find the product identifier on the item, its documentation or the seller's information. A QR code or NFC tag may link directly to the associated record.
A blockchain-based passport may include:
The smart contract address.
The token ID.
A scan can open the linked product information in a compatible mobile experience.
02
Review any blockchain reference
Some passports include a blockchain reference. When one is provided, use the linked explorer to inspect the record and its published details.
Check:
The contract address matches an address the issuer identifies as its own.
The creator or deployer is consistent with the issuer's information.
The contract information is available to inspect, if applicable.
These checks provide context about the record's technical source; they do not establish that the product is genuine.
03
Review the brand or creator
Review the issuer information included with the passport and compare it with information from the brand, maker or creator.
Compare:
The recorded creator or issuer matches the expected manufacturer, artist or brand.
This helps identify who supplied the passport information.
04
Check file integrity
Some passport formats include a cryptographic fingerprint of a file. If the method and recorded value are provided, compare them with a fingerprint calculated from the file.
For a file-integrity check:
Download the JSON file.
Calculate its hash using the specified hashing algorithm.
Retrieve the recorded fingerprint from its cited source.
Compare both values.
Matching hashes
The file matches the recorded fingerprint.
Different hashes
The file differs from the recorded fingerprint or the comparison method differs.
05
Compare the passport with the item
The passport contains information describing the asset, including high-resolution images.
Compare:
Physical appearance.
Serial numbers.
Unique markings.
Manufacturing information.
High-resolution photographs contained in the passport.
Confirm that the asset in your possession matches the asset described in the passport.
A close match supports the association between the record and the item, but visual and document checks still need judgment.
06
Review ownership information
If ownership information is included, review its source, date and meaning. A wallet address or token record alone does not establish the legal owner of a physical item.
Compare the recorded wallet address with:
The wallet claiming ownership.
A matching address indicates control of the associated digital account or token; interpret it according to the passport's ownership model.
07
Review the evidence chain
These checks help readers assess the sources and meaning of the information in a product passport:
01
The issuer is identifiable and matches the brand or creator.
02
Supporting documents and source information are available for review.
03
A file-integrity check matches the recorded evidence, where provided.
04
The product details and images correspond with the item being inspected.
05
Ownership information has a clear source and context.
Each check addresses a different question. Together, the issuer, documents, file integrity, product details and ownership context give a fuller basis for assessing the record.
